Trial of Rashed Khan Menon and Qamrul Islam

The Trial involves the prosecution of the detained politician Rashed Khan Menon (the president of the Workers Party, a member of parliament until the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024 and previously a minister) and Qamrul Islam, a Presidium Member of the Awami League,  a member of parliament until the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024, and previously a minister, until 2018)

Menon was originally arrested by police from his home on August 22, 2024 in relation to a murder case under the country’s penal code and Qamrul Islam was arrested from Uttara on 18 November 2024, also in relation to a murder case. They were subseqently shown attest at the International Crimes Tribunal.

The trial is taking place in Court 1 of the ICT.

FORMAL CHARGE

On February 3, 2026, the ICT Prosecutors submitted its “formal charge” against Rashed Khan Menon to the Tribunal which took “cognisance” of it.

CHARGE FRAMING

Following this, there was a process of “charge-framing”: where the prosecution argues to the Tribunal that he should frame its proposed charges, and the defence has an opportunity to argue that it should instead discharge the accused.
